HOW TO DO A FORWARD WALKOVER

With a forward walkover, you need good forward momentum and your back should at least moderately flexible (you can hold a backbend/bridge position). It’s easier if you start off with a few steps before doing it. You place both hands on the ground, kick one leg up, arch your back so that the foot can touch the ground, and DO NOT BEND YOUR LEG WHEN YOUR FOOT TOUCHES THE GROUND. If you do, you will end up in a sitting position. Not good. When you’ve touched the ground with your foot, maintain your forward momentum by following through with your torso and standing up. This all works if your whole body moves forward with good momentum. You have momentum when you put your hands down, kick your legs up, and raise your torso up. Very important: you can’t do the walkover slowly. There’s no hop in a walkover, the whole movement is smooth. Momentum is the key! Especially with a forward handspring, too.

HOW TO DO A FORWARD HANDSPRING

For a forward handspring it’d be good to have a few steps or running start until you get used to it. You should have good forward momentum while you’re going into it. Lunge forward and put your hands on the ground. When you kick your legs up, kick them up and forward, (more force forward than up) and while your legs are traveling over you push off your hands (most people don’t do this and crash) and use the forward momentum to raise your torso up when/if you land on your feet. There are two ways to land a forward handspring: 1; the gymnast way is to land standing up (above). 2; the Capoeirista way is to land in more of a squat, lower to the ground (below). You’ll probably land in a squat the first bunch of times. Also, you might find it easier to kick up one leg first and then kick up the second leg after.

HOW TO DO A FORWARD FLIP

Front flips are weird because you get the lift from your legs and it’s easier to get momentum by lifting them up (a la backflip) rather than back. First get yourself something soft to land on. Please. You’ll thank yourself later. I’d recommend taking a bunch of running steps first. Right before you take off, take a small hop into the jump. Then right before you jump, make sure your feet are together slightly in front of your body. A common error is to lean forward as you jump. If you lean forward as you try a forward flip you’ll drive into the ground, so don’t lean! When you jump, really jump UP as high as you can and tuck your legs as you whip them up. Rolling into a ball in midair and grabbing your legs makes it easier. Since you probably won’t land on your feet the first time try to absorb the landing with your hands as well as your feet in case you land kinda on your back. Also put your hands down if you freak out midway through and freeze up.
