Copy rights? Referencing? What on earth is it?

Or, you may find this one:

  • Copyright@2008, 2005 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • All rights reserved. No part of the material protected by this copyright notice may be reproduced or utilized in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without written permission from the copyright owner.

Commonly used referencing system:

  • American Psychological Association (APA)
  • British Referencing System
  • Others

(note: there is no single-best-referencing system)

Types of reference:

In text reference:

  • when someone else’s work has directly or indirectly taken into or influence your work, for example:
    • directly quote someone else’s work
    • paraphrase someone else’s work

In-text citation consists of:

– author surname(s) (in the order that they appear on the actual publication), followed by the year of publication of the source that you are citing.

– include page or paragraph numbers for direct quotes, and for paraphrasing where placed immediately after the text which refers to the source being cited

– If quoting or citing a source which is cited within another, secondary reference, mention the source with the secondary reference details: e.g. Smith (as cited in Jones, 2010). Only the secondary reference should be included in the reference list.

Sample of an in-text reference

Material girl was released in the mid of 1980s. It was just shortly after the time when issue of Abortion Right and Equal Right Amendment (ERA) created an intense conflict in the political domain in the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly in the US (Himmelstein, 1986, p. 1). Debate over pro-contra feminism movement has since long ago become the focus of analysis of many researchers, but Himmelstein made a different claim by stating that the anti feminism movement is related to religious involvement and cultural beliefs on the conventional role of women.

End-text reference

All readings and ideas taken from other authors (writer) should be clearly written in the reference list, eventhough you may not directly quote the words (citing) or paraphrase the sentences from the original sources.

Sampe of a reference list:

Can you identify the rules of writing a reference list?
